ej's voice over journey
My journey into the world art of Voice Over. I've begun learning how to use my voice to entertain and inform listeners. Since I just started I might as well use my voice to inform others of my path. Who knows, what I have to say may help someone else interested in this art avoid mistakes and have a smoother entry.

Segment 1:[ Moving forward ]
I got a direct invite from 2 different potential clients to voice a character. I think the potential clients listened to my demo reel, along with others, and picked me and some others out of the list and sent us invites. Either way I’m happy I got selected. One role is to be a voice in a character's head. One of those flashbacks, in this one she is playing basketball in a tournament and I’m the play by play announcer. Hopefully I did a good job. The other is for an independent comic that will be on youtube. I think it’s for the lead role and I only think that because I don’t see any other characters except the main ones. I’m sure there will be others but we shall see. Speaking of characters, I've finished my second class on character creation.
Segment 2: [Coaching on characters ]
The course is on how to create a character from scratch and create a voice for those characters. It’s been really fun and informative and we have homework. The first class we were given a sheet with about 10 characters on it with a short script. Our task was to create a voice and personality for them using the 4 things that make up a characters voice.
- Pitch - how high or low is the voice
- Accent - Does this character have an accent or not
- Rhythm & Cadence - Is this person a fast talker, slow talker, has a stutter etc..
- Noise - Anything that’s not a word, could be a lisp, rasp, tic of some sort.
I got some insight on my sound and that may be due to me removing a shield from my mic. This shield keeps errant sounds from bouncing back or entering the mic from different angles. I put it back on so we shall see what my review is for the new homework assignment. I’m still looking for ways to treat this space that don’t require me to spend tons of money and can fit in this tiny space. Putting up my booth takes time but also makes it difficult to move around the space and relax in the space. It’s just over crowded.
Segment 3: [ Creating a treated space]
For recording my space needs to be treated to remove reverb, echos from bouncing sound off of walls, desktops, even my computer screens where I’m reading my scripts. I don’t want to glue foam on the walls as they are covered with wallpaper and I don’t want that being pulled down from the weight of the foam or ripping/tearing if I need to take it down. I can probably use tacks to hold them in place and I may not need all that many. Portable or collapsable booths can range from $400.00, for a desktop or small free standing unit to over $4K for a booth you can stand up in and accommodate 2 people. Today or tomorrow I’m heading to my local DIY store to see what I can dig up. A few weeks ago I went to a department store that had a music section but it was gone. There are some other music stores I can check out but haven’t ventured into Yokohama lately to visit them. I’m covering all this because of the feedback on my homework where the instructor mentioned that my sound was
