ej's voice over journey
My journey into the world art of Voice Over. I've begun learning how to use my voice to entertain and inform listeners. Since I just started I might as well use my voice to inform others of my path. Who knows, what I have to say may help someone else interested in this art avoid mistakes and have a smoother entry.

EJ’s Journey into Voice Over English Version Season 3 Episode 5
Episode Title: [ ]
Host(s): Me
Music Intro fades in: Music provided by NEFEX
Intro - Welcome to EJ’s Voice Over Journey — the podcast where the mic is always live and the learning never stops. I’m EJ, a voice actor navigating the world of VO, from auditions and coaching to client work and everything in between. Whether you’re just starting out or deep into your voice over path, join me as I share the highs, lows, lessons, and laughs from behind the booth. Let’s bring the script to life — together.
Intro track fades out content starts
Segment 1:[ Fiverr and other sites ]
I’ve gone back to my Fiverr site and added 2 more gigs. One for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response or ASMR. ASMR is a term used to describe a tingling, static-like, or goosebumps sensation in response to specific triggering audio or visual stimuli. Stimuli that can trigger ASMR, as reported by those who experience it, include spoken or whispering voices, quiet clicking of the tongue or repetitive sounds. I am in the process of creating some default ASMR recordings for people who practice yoga and want a deep resonant voice to focus on. In the Gig I let clients know that if they have some passages in mind or have their own mantra I’ll record it for them.
My other Gig is for folks who are looking for someone to do youtube VO’s specifically. You have an unboxing video, an explainer video or any type of video I will provide my voice.
My first gig is simply VO for e-learning, commercials and standard things like that.
Learning how to create gigs in Fiverr has been ongoing for me. I was getting some odd results when trying to find my gig online and seeing what it looked like. That was the wrong method to use as the pricing kept coming out wrong. Instead of charging $5.00 for a basic read it was charging $720 dollars or even worse. After some time I started using the internal preview function and that worked out better. Also using my phone to search worked out better and showed accurate results.
I’m picking up scammers on Fiverr rather than actual clients so that’s not encouraging but it’s bound to happen.
Segment 2: [Coaching ]
I attended a VO Gym class last week. This was like other group coaching classes where you get about 15 minutes per student and learn how to audition for roles, read copy and understand that you need to bring life to the script. Your life, your voice, read the copy using the specks provided such as calm soothing voice with a hint of humor and do it in conversational style. You must find out how you would normally sound doing this and adapt it to the copy.
Segment 3: [Speaking of roles and paid]
Yesterday I auditioned for an E-learning role for a company in England. Apparently I got their attention because a few hours later I got a direct message to submit a requested read with a specific script. I’m still waiting to hear back and since it’s Saturday there I don’t plan to hear anything until Tuesday JST. I auditioned for a bunch of roles on Backstage which sounded really fun.
As for the Casting Call club I’m keeping up with what’s getting posted for the roles I have been selected for.
Segment 4: [ GameDev and other sites ]
I created a list of lines to be read for a GameDev Market audio pack. I’ve got a few uploaded now and plan to upload more this week. I took time to create a file name convention that makes it easy to know what’s in the audio pack. My next set will be for action games that are based around the Navy. The usual General Quarters calls, man overboard, Ship fire and directions to the fire.
Segment 5: [ Unexpectedly long time between posts]
This post was started March 31st/April 1st. March 31st was my last day of full time regular work and I retired on that date. I had my mental and written schedule all laid out as to how my days were going to go. Well that all changed as I spent the first 2 ½ weeks getting my immigration stuff and drivers license stuff taken care of. Also getting used to being retired, that's a job in and of itself. I’ve also been busy taking classes and getting my online store up and running. It’s been up and running but needed and still needs more attention. Still haven’t sold a thing but it’s not because it can’t be found online. I can reach it by google search based on the name but apparently I haven’t made it enticing enough to attract customers. I need to work on that and learn how to market myself. Speaking of marketing I have signed up for a Closing Credits class on how to find my own work as a VO. This class starts tomorrow, it’s May by the way, and I’m looking forward to this. The other class I’m in is called VO 101 and that’s only been one week. All classes are one day a week so it’s not something I attend every day. I’m trying to also increase my exposure to Japanese to get my language skills on point. Doing this podcast is part of that but I need to get out more and mingle. I’ll probably dust off the meetup app and see if I can find some folks meeting during the day but most likely that will be an evening thing. This will be posted soon so I can make a proper podcast covering what I’ve been up to for the past 5 weeks.
Segment 6:[ Two weeks later]
Wow for a retired guy I sure am busy. In my CCC VA 101 class our instructor dropped a challenge on us. If we get 200 auditions by the end of class then we can get our Demo and Sampler reel done at no cost. This usually runs over $800.00 US. I’ve been doing 10 a day on average and have been shortlisted for some roles on CCC, and picked up 2 on Backstage. One is an audiobook where I’m a supporting character, an FBI directory. I delivered my lines the other day and apparently have a week or so before the next chapter comes out. I really got to get my scheduling right so I don’t miss out or get behind. The other course I’m taking is about how to run the business. I’m creating my webpage, slowly, but I’m making progress. I work on it a little bit at a time. Right now I have my About me page, a sample page of my VO work and Youtube work. I need to create a page for client intake. I can’t decide if I should direct them to Voices.com, or Backstage.com where I already have a presence that can handle payment. That’s what I wish to do so I don’t have to have multiple accounts setup for payment, I have a site that can do vetting if I need it and make life a bit easier as far as tracking the business. The flip side is once they’re on those sites my competition goes up. Of course that means I just have to be better than the competition. There is probably a way to set up my business in the US and operate from anywhere. The issue is when setting up some sites like Amazon they want proof you're in a specific location like a utility bill. Maybe an LLC is the way to go for this so I’ll have to learn how to set that up.
Outro- Thanks for tuning in to EJ’s Voice Over Journey. If you’re finding value in the ride, don’t forget to follow the show and share it with fellow voice actors or anyone curious about the world behind the mic. Until next time — (outro music fades in) keep practicing, keep recording, and above all, keep using your voice.
